GMaps Pedometer

Oh baby I've been waiting for this. Just mere days ago I was wondering when someone would get around to hacking Google maps so that I could plot my running routes and measure my distances more accurately and lo and behold along comes Gmaps Pedometer.
Here's a run down of some of the features of this cool tool which seems to be in its early stages of development, meaning that changes are sure to be made:

  • Calculate distance in miles or kilometers
  • Choose whether or not to display mile/kilometer markers along the route
  • Calculate calories burned
  • Create permalinks (including tinyurls) to your maps so that they are just a bookmark away

actively mobile :: Mobile design for running

Mobile design for runners

From Jennifer Bove's phd thesis:

The primary goal of my research is to explore the changing role of the
mobile phone as a personal device, and how the mobile phone could
adapt to become a dedicated device, designed to fit particular
aspects of our lives. Here, I explore the role of the mobile phone in
the life of an athletic, active user, and how mobile functions and
services might be tailored to the context running. Taking into
consideration the mindset of a user while running, I look at their
physical and psychological needs and motivations, and design
specifically for use during their workouts.

Nike ACG COMMJacket

Get this, Nike's latest snow jacket comes with a built in radio, microphone and earpiece, so that when you fall off off-piste you'll be able to radio your fellow ACG COMMJacket wearer for assistance. There's an "ergonomic communication vest" that houses the two-way radio. The speaker is positioned near your ear, while a microphone is secreted near your mouth and a push-to-talk button is on your chest. The idea is that you can poke yourself in the chest and speak whenever you need to, without having to take your gloves off. It'll cost you £400.

More productivity enhancers

Lunar Command is a Flash version of the old Missle Command coin-op video game. As with the best Flash Games you mainly use the mouse to play although the space bar is also used to a lesser extent.

Watching the Watchers

Professor Lives Life As a Cyborg

And in a world of ever-increasing surveillance cameras for security, and strong database-mining software for government intelligence and corporate marketing, Mann believes regular people ought to have cameras and powerful computers on them, too. It's all about leveling the power dynamic.

"People feel they're masters of their own destiny when everything they need is right there with them," he says.

The Spirit of Geek Radio

Wow, its been a long time since I've posted to this blog. Don't despair though because I continue to be quite busy with a real life which has interfered with my online activities. One of the more interesting developments is a secret that I've been keeping from you until now. Squares Cubed is the newest addition to the roster of McMaster University radio and it is hosted by yours truly and my good friend Marc Kelsey. We're on Thursday nights from 10:30 to 11:30 sandwiched inbetween the hip-hop and down beat shows. Last night was our fourth show and we are really developing our own style while constantly looking to improve the content and style of our show. We're going for a kinds Wired/boingboing-ish radio experience and so far we're quite happy with the results. You can tune in live on the web here or you can visit our website to listen to archived shows.

Its DNA Discovery Day!

Happy DNA Discovery Day everyone!
It was 50 years ago today that Crick and Watson published their findings and forever changed our world. This day is not without controversy though. The popular line is that Francis Crick and James Watson were the two main persons involved in this discovery but there findings, including the molecular structure of the doubl helix, was largely based on efforts of Rosalind Franklin. Which ever version you choose to believe there is no putting this genie back into the bottle so we as human beings have a responsibility to treat the issues surrounding this discovery and it potential uses and misuses with the respect, intelligence and humility that it deserves.
Now, who wants ice cream with their cake?

No problem with Template

It seems the "problem" with my template was that it didn't have enough posts in it to format properly. With enough posts the Recent Entries and Links subheadings will be in their proper place on the right side of the page. Hurray for me for figuring it out. On an unrelated note my cat just farted. Gross!

I've altered the blog template

I've altered the template of this blog so that you can send me an email simply by clicking my nickname that appears at the end of each post. Go ahead and click it. Not only will it make you feel good it'll also clear up blemishes, straighten your teeth and generally make you more attractive to a potential mate.

Holy crap! I share my Birthday with Google

Holy crap! I share my birthday with Google.
As if thats not enough our company announced that the current pay freeze that started last December will end this December. While that is good news it means that I will not receive a raise this year. I squeaked mine in just before the freeze began last year so to be fair to everyone else the freeze only ends in time to compensate my compadres who missed out this year. And when I say compadres you know I mean Marc and Kirk. This means that they'll be treating me to a sushi lunch next week.
My wife bought me one of the prequels to Dune, my all time sci-fi fave series along with Gibson's Sprawl series and Lord of the Rings. Unfortunately its the third in a series and I haven't read the first two yet. A quick trip to the local Chapters should remedy that situation.
